Jettina Wilhelmina Haven passed away peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Marie de Villa Retirement Center in Town & Country, Mo.
Mrs. Haven, 96, resided at Marie de Villa since July of 2011, after moving here from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to be closer to her family. She was born on May 26, 1916 in Groningen, Netherlands, to Jakob Willem van Weerden and Egbertha Bosma.
She was one of very few women at the time to earn a master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Groningen, where her schooling was interrupted during World War II by the invasion of the Netherlands by Germany. She met her husband, Dr. Ysbrand Haven, while the two were students at the university in Groningen, and they married on April 3, 1947.
The family emigrated to Winston-Salem in 1965, after Dr. Haven accepted a position as professor of physics at Wake Forest University. Mrs. Haven was preceded in death by her husband, who died in May of 1989.
She is survived by a daughter, Erna Haven of Atlanta, Ga., and two sons, Hans (Joan) Haven of Chesterfield, Mo. and Willem (Debi) Haven of Clarkston, Michigan. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Louise and James Haven, both of Clarkston. Mrs. Haven also leaves behind many loving relatives among her husband’s family in the Netherlands and in England. Her family will miss her greatly.
Funeral services are pending and will be held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
